Felipe Lopez: The Allure of Water
The critic and University of Houston professor on water as the thread through the work.

Felipe Lopez’s creative elements are water and light.
Felipe Lopez is a multidimensional visual artist. Born in the Bronx to a Cuban-American family, he casts microcosms in resin inside the shape of a light bulb and suspends hand-tied fishing flies within them. These works become sculptures, chandeliers, faucets and immersive installations about water as a precious commodity and a spiritual element.

Raphael Rubinstein
“Although Felipe Lopez is working in an abstract mode, his paintings and multi-medium sculptural works are no less deeply entranced by the domain of water… Like the aquatic element he so lovingly evokes, Lopez’s work is never at rest, always changing, relentlessly flowing into new artistic territory, making waves.”

Sculptor and multidisciplinary artist, born in the Bronx to a Cuban American family of fishermen and farmers. The work fuses light bulbs, faucets, netting, and hand-tied fishing flies into illuminated sculptures about water and the natural world. Over fifteen years and more than fifty exhibitions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Art Miami, and SCOPE Miami.
From water comes freedom.
Ab Aqua Libertas, 2019
I make these works from common objects, many of them petrochemical byproducts, as a statement about the state of our environment. The light bulb, the faucet, the fishing fly: each one is something we use without thinking, and each one depends on water. As a descendant of Cuban fishermen and farmers, I rebuild small natural worlds inside them. As a husband and father, I think about what we are leaving for the next generation to drink.
